Each dress designer/vendor has it's own size chart .  Many size charts are similar but they do vary so please check the 
size chart link for each dress and carefully select your size.

Measuring Guide for Dresses & Gowns

• Bust: Measure over the fullest part of your bust.

• Waist: Measure around your natural waistline; keep the measuring tape snug but not tight.

• Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips, 8" below your waist.  

How to determine your size?  
    Start with WAIST size first, then BUST, then HIP.

For example, your measurements are (40 bust), (31 waist), (46 hip), and size chart for the dress is as following.

Take following steps:

1) Start with your WAIST measurement, which is 31, and compare it to WAIST size of Small. Size Small(30) is too tight so consider Medium or Large for now. 

2) Next, look at your BUST size, which is 40, and it's bigger than Medium(39), so drop Medium and look at Large.  BUST measurement for Large is 41, so it's OK.

3) Finally, look at your HIP measurement, which is 46. It is less than the HIP measurement of Large, so Large would be the right size.  If your HIP measure was bigger than 47, than you would need to consider XL. 

On average, dresses are made for height of 5' 7" to 5' 8"
